Approach
Adaptive Sports Connection (ASC), an Ohio-based nonprofit, offers sports and therapeutic recreation to athletes with all types of physical and cognitive abilities. They serve people of all ages, in particular many veterans at their location in Powell, Ohio along the Scioto River as well as at various recreational places. Looking to expand and build a new, larger facility that allows them to broaden their accessible offerings both indoors and out, the project is currently in Schematic Design.
The new Adventure Center will have a timeless feel and be welcoming to all. The exterior design features rustic and natural materials to establish a connection with the surrounding nature. A warm event space will allow for the hosting of various events and meetings. A new gazebo, an outdoor shelter and a fire pit area, round out fun spaces for users outside in addition to an existing canoe launch along the river. The project will also include offices for ASC, storage for water sports and adaptive biking as well as being a hub for their water sports programs.
The new center isn’t only about providing new recreational opportunities however. It is being designed to go beyond minimal ADA Guidelines to create a supportive environment for its users who have various abilities. From plenty of accessible van parking to automatic doors to companion care adaptable bathrooms complete with accessible showers, our team is designing the facility to aid and encourage users in their abilities.
