WAVE Foundation

Approach

The WAVE Foundation, an educational nonprofit in partnership with Newport Aquarium, was in need of a more functional space for their staff and programs. MA Design collaborated closely with WAVE to evaluate their needs and provide test fits for a new tenant space, as they relocated from inside the Aquarium to a storefront at Newport on the Levee.

The design of their new office was shaped by three key goals: creating a fun, branded learning environment for children, establishing efficient workspaces for staff, and incorporating sustainable design features that align with WAVE’s conservation efforts. Integrating multiple classrooms and private restrooms for participants, primarily children ages 4-14, allows WAVE to bring all of their events in-house.

To reinforce WAVE’s commitment to sustainability, custom design elements were integrated throughout, including a concrete trough sink resembling a sandy beach, a vibrant mural that depicts ocean life from the shoreline to the deep sea, and eco-friendly carpeting made from recycled bottles.

The result is a vibrant, engaging environment where children can explore ocean life and conservation in a playful setting, while staff benefit from the much-needed acoustic privacy and collaboration spaces that foster productivity. This thoughtfully designed space supports WAVE Foundation’s mission and growth, offering a seamless blend of educational and operational functionality.
