Approach
Through thoughtful design and a patient-centered approach, this project expands Mount Carmel’s service capabilities in New Albany, a growing community northwest of Columbus. Carving out 7,900 SF of existing support service and Pre/Post/PACU space on the first floor at MCNA’s Surgical Hospital, the renovation creates a new Emergency Department. The new ED includes 10 bays—5 renovated, and 5 new bays for triage, trauma/resuscitation, BH preferred, decontamination, and isolation/SANE purposes.
Design innovations focused on maximizing patient care efficiency while ensuring comfort and privacy. The design team paid particular attention to streamlining the workflow for emergency care, balancing technical requirements of trauma care with a calming environment. The new bays are configured to provide clear, direct access for medical staff, while the inclusion of the BH-preferred and SANE bays highlight the hospital’s commitment to accommodating diverse emergency care needs, enhancing both patient safety and dignity.
Renovating the first floor required relocating support areas like the bone density room and reading rooms to the second floor, and making modifications necessary for displaced pre/post/pacu patient care and support services. Minimal site work was needed for exterior signage, site flow, and emergency response/decontamination. The project included planning for future expansion of emergency services on the MCNA campus.
