Approach
The Adena Orthopedic and Spine Institute welcomes patients and caregivers as the prominent new building on the main campus in Chillicothe, Ohio. At 111,000 SF and five-stories, the comprehensive, state-of-the-art facility is the new “face” of the hospital. The focus of the entire facility is patient experience, with design centered on hospitality-inspired concepts that provide comfort and confidence for patients and their family.
Taking inspiration from the nearby rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and the Hopewell Mounds, the design is shaped by the surrounding community and culture. Curves and angles that are important to the mound formations were incorporated into the form of the building as well as the interior aesthetic. From the curved reception desks to the 15 degree angles that harken to the relationship of the solstice to the mounds, these principles are infused thoughtfully throughout the project.
Design elements are focused on creating healing and technically advanced environments for patients, staff and visitors to feel comfortable and safe. The interior palette, materials and finishes have an earthy feel that reflect the patterns, textures and colors of the prairie landscape. Each space is thoughtfully arranged around daylight, views, and minimizing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) to expedite recovery and provide optimal working conditions for surgeons and staff.
