Home is at the heart of this new community hospital.

Approach

MA Design was challenged to design a replacement Critical Access Hospital while maintaining access to the existing hospital that would be demolished on the same site. The new Community Hospital includes 25 patient beds, 5 Operating Rooms, pre- and post-op bays and related perioperative support spaces, an Emergency Department with 10 exam rooms, an imaging department with MRI, CT Scan, and Nuclear Med Scan, clinical and administrative spaces, and support spaces for food services, materials management, labs, and pharmacy. Contoured to fit behind the current hospital, the new hospital is positioned to maintain strategic connections to the adjacent outpatient buildings and create a new front door for the Medical Center Campus.

Inspired by the traditional comforts of home, MA designed the new hospital around the symbolic central hearth and the use of natural patterns and tones from the native landscape. The exterior facade uses horizontal brick bands to reflect the rows of crops in the surrounding farmland and visually connects to the lines of the adjacent outpatient buildings that remain. The dramatic stone and glass entrance is a welcoming beacon and a distinctive centerpiece from the neutral grays and browns that blend with the surrounding campus buildings.

Inside the new hospital, the central common space features a fireplace and adjoins the cafe to create a home-like atmosphere with the warmth and comfort of a family gathering space for patients, families, and caregivers. The interior design elements showcase the health system’s mission of serving the community through high-quality patient care and education. The organic palette and mix of materials offer a one-of-a-kind space that continues the legacy and culture that are trademarks of the community. From the thoughtful placement and inclusion of the new Community Hospital to harmonize with the existing campus, to the resilient, community-focused design elements, this building will provide generations of care to this community.
