Multi-phased renovation accomplished while remaining fully functional during the entire process.

Approach

Completed in two phases to allow for the ED to be operational 24/7 throughout construction, the first phase of the project was completed in April 2021 and the second phase is scheduled to be done in November 2021. The project dealt with the complexities of multiple previous additions and alterations to the space and included other enabling projects to move the outpatient labs and entry.

MA’s design team worked with the hospital stakeholders and ED staff to redesign the workflow of the space to be similar to other OhioHealth EDs enabling rotating staff to deliver services efficiently and safely, supported by technology, to patients with a variety of acuities. Previously rooms were separated only by curtains, now treatment rooms are completely private rooms. Providing a healing environment guided all decisions for finishes, artwork and accessibility. A more hospitable intake area greets patients and visitors, while large nurse stations from which all treatment room doors can be seen helps staff address the full spectrum of patient needs quickly. Staff lockers and break room as well as a break room for EMS is included.

When completed the ED will feature 16 patient rooms, including two triage rooms and one large resuscitation room as well as a new location and space for their outpatient services.
