Incorporating underlying design inspiration from site’s past.

Approach

The Lumberyard is the fourth phase in a series of student-focused housing projects that M+A has designed near Florida State’s campus. The site was formerly a locally owned lumberyard which became the underlying design inspiration—most notably represented in the front entry canopy structure. Through the use of steel bent beams and a floating roof that is skinned in a reclaimed wood veneer, the building’s design hints at elements from the site’s past. This rustic lumberyard feel was extended into the community room with the use of black metals, reclaimed wood, and bare concrete. To tie into other Florida State housing in the area, designers incorporated the same brick, use of stucco and reveal patterning.

The site also offers it’s residents two courtyards and a resident only onsite in-ground pool with grill structure.
