Approach
Rowan House is a Memory Care community providing Montessori-based care that promotes dignity, meaningful engagement, and independence throughout life. The modernization of the space reflects not only the Friendship Village of Dublin brand aesthetic, but also incorporates Montessori-based design elements. MA Design provided the interior design inspiration and guided all aspects of the design direction for art, furniture and interior finishes. Careful attention was paid to incorporate textures that could be experienced interactively through touch. Open shelves are thoughtfully accessorized with decorative objects that were curated to be safe and stimulating for residents to touch and hold. Plush, tufted ottomans and ribbed wood credenza create moments for residents to run their hands across sensational textures. Artwork with unique patterns and dimensional shapes activate the walls throughout the space. Abstract flower vases mounted on sliding hardware can be manipulated easily by Residents. Biophilic elements including wood blocks, concrete planters, and a gardening station extend the outdoor courtyard and therapeutic horticulture program inside for Residents to always have a connection to nature.
The space is designed around the centrally located octagon shaped family kitchen. Purposefully designed for flexibility to accommodate varying group sizes and programs, but with finishing touches that feel more like a dining space in an upscale home. Finding the right balance between comfort and function was achieved by custom furniture pieces crafted by local artists to perfectly fit the space. Tables fabricated by A Carpenter’s Son (ACS) with wood tops finished to match the flooring, a grand farmhouse style dining table with turned legs and casters can be easily moved, and a credenza for the lobby to accommodate wellness checks needed at the entry – are all tailor made to optimize the function and feel of the space. The completed space is a tranquil and sophisticated home-like environment that promotes self-directed engagement and safe independence.
