Design elements that appeal to low vision patients

Approach

Fry Hall, in OSU’s College of Optometry, houses both a pediatric clinic and a low vision rehab clinic. For this renovation project, MA Design worked collaboratively with clinic leadership to design a new shared space that would function appropriately for the unique requirements of each patient group. With both populations in mind, MA’s design uses high contrast, bold colors and large graphics to:

  • complement a modern aesthetic
  • increase way-finding
  • help distinguish elements of the space
  • support a fun environment

To support patients with varied degrees of vision loss, contrasting colors help separate wall and floor surfaces and oversized door graphics enhance way-finding. The design concept was translated to the pediatric side of the clinic through bold, colored columns and punches of colors on back walls of exam rooms. These elements help differentiate the space and provide an enjoyable atmosphere for children.
